What we keep about you, why, and what you can do about it.
1Who runs this site
L’Anatomie du Parfum, at anatomyofperfume.com. Write to [email protected] about anything on this page.
This page says what L’Anatomie du Parfum keeps about you, why, and what you can do about it. It covers anatomyofperfume.com and nothing else.
The site is run from the United States.
2Reading the site
You can read every page without an account, and we keep nothing on our computers about a reader who has none.
No page asks you to sign in before you can read it. The site carries no advertising code and nothing that follows you from page to page or to other sites. The one thing a reader without an account can send us is an ask for a perfume, described below.
The company that sends our pages to your browser, Cloudflare, sees the internet address each request comes from, as every web host does, and keeps short-lived records of requests to keep the site running and safe.
3What is saved in your own browser
A few things are saved inside your browser so the site remembers them. They stay on your device, and we cannot see them.
- The shelf: each perfume marked owned or wanted, what was written on each card, and the answers to its questions. It stays until you clear your browser.
- The perfumes this reader asked us to add: what they typed, when, where on the site, the house and a link if they added them, and, once the ask is sent, its number and a key that lets this browser alone add to it. It stays until you clear your browser.
- The last eight perfumes looked up on the quick look. It stays until you clear your browser.
- How the reader likes their shelf shown: as a grid or as cards, and in what order. It stays until you clear your browser.
- How the reader likes the list of houses shown. It stays until you clear your browser.
- Whether the reader chose the day or the night version of the site. Nothing is kept while the site follows their device. It stays until you clear your browser.
- The perfume the reader picked to take apart on the front door. It stays until you clear your browser.
- A count of visits to the front door, so it opens on a different perfume each time. It stays until you clear your browser.
- The old “Save for later” list. It is moved onto the shelf and then erased. It stays until you clear your browser.
- Which one-time hints this reader has already been shown, so none is shown twice. It stays until you clear your browser.
- The page the reader came from, so “back” returns to the same place. It is gone when you close the tab.
- How far down the front door the reader had scrolled. It is gone when you close the tab.
- The perfume last opened on the front door, during this visit. It is gone when you close the tab.
- Your sign-in, once you have an account: the keys that keep this browser signed in, your email address, and your name and its face. It stays until you clear your browser.
- A sign-in under way: the email address typed, the names dealt and the card waiting to be kept, so a page reloaded while you fetch the code picks up where it was. It is gone when you close the tab.
- That this tab is trying sign-in before it is open to every reader. It is gone when you close the tab.
Clearing your browser's saved data erases all of it. None of it is sent to us, with two exceptions: an ask, when you press “Ask for it”, and your shelf and your answers, if you make an account.
4Asking for a perfume
When you press “Ask for it”, the ask is sent to us and kept. It holds what you asked for, and nothing about who you are.
- What you typed.
- The house and a link, if you add them.
- Where on the site you asked, and the page you were on.
- The time.
We keep no email address, no browser identifier and no internet address with an ask. The company that sends our pages, Cloudflare, sees the address an ask comes from, as it does for every page, and uses it at that moment to turn away floods of asks. It is not stored with the ask.
Your browser keeps its own list of what you asked for, with a key that lets that browser alone add the house or a link to its own ask.
No account is needed to ask.
5What an account adds
An account keeps a copy of your shelf on our computers, so it is still there on a new phone. For that we keep your email address and what you put on your shelf.
- Your email address. If you sign in with Apple or Google, they pass it to us; Apple lets you pass a stand-in address instead.
- A record that you signed in, and a note in your browser that keeps you signed in. We keep no password, because there is none.
- Your shelf: each perfume you marked as owned or wanted, and what you wrote on its card, such as its size, when it became yours, what you paid, and a line of your own.
- Your answers to the seven questions a card asks: How long does it last on you? How far does it carry? When do you wear it? How do you feel about it? Do people remark on it? Would you buy it again? What can you smell in it?
- Your choices: what your public shelf shows, and the name and picture you chose for it.
- A record of each email we sent you.
We ask for nothing else. We do not ask your date of birth, your address or a phone number.
6How your answers are counted
Your answers are added to the totals on each perfume's page. That is part of having an account.
What is counted: your answers to the seven questions, and the band you chose for what you paid. They are counted only for perfumes on your shelf as owned.
A total is a count of many readers' answers, such as “17 of 38 owners”. It never shows a name, and no figure is shown until at least five owners have answered.
Delete your account and your answers leave the totals with it.
The totals are honest by rule. We never invent an answer, never hide answers because they are unkind, and never reward an answer for being kind. A sudden flood of answers on one perfume may be set aside while we look at it, whatever those answers say.
7Your public shelf
Nothing of yours is public until you switch it on.
Public shelves are not open yet. When they open, you may give your shelf a public page under the name you were dealt. You decide what it shows about each card: that you own it, since when, your signature, what you are looking for. Each of those is off until you switch it on.
A public shelf can be opened by anyone and found by search engines. You can take it down, or change what it shows, at any time.
8A line of your own
A line you write on a card may be shown on that perfume's page, without your name, once we have read it.
No line is shown today. Before any is, the box where you write will say so, with a switch beside it to keep a line to yourself.
We read each line before it appears, and we do not show lines that are cruel, false or about a person.
9How this site earns
From shop links that pay us when you buy, from reports made of totals, and, only if you say yes, from advertising. We do not sell lists of readers or any one reader's answers.
Shop links. No link on the site pays us yet. When one does, it will say so beside it. Pressing it will take you to the shop's own site with a tag that tells the shop you came from us; the shop and the network it works through then apply their own privacy pages, and this page will name each network. The network tells us that a purchase was made through our link. It does not tell us who you are. A shop link never changes what the site says about a perfume.
Reports made of totals. We may gather totals into reports for a perfume house, a shop or a publication, paid or not. A report holds counts of many readers' answers. No reader can be picked out of one.
Advertising. It is not switched on today. If it is switched on, a notice will ask your consent first and will name each company that would receive anything; nothing is sent before you say yes. Visitors in Europe, Britain and Switzerland are never tracked.
What we do not do: we do not sell, rent or hand over your email address, your shelf or your own answers to anyone.
10Who else handles your information
A few companies do jobs for us and handle your information only to do those jobs.
- Supabase stores accounts and shelves.
- Mailgun sends the email that carries your sign-in code.
- Apple or Google, if you sign in with one of them, learns that you signed in to this site.
- Cloudflare sends the site's pages to your browser and stores the asks.
None of them may use your information for their own purposes.
11Email
We email you a sign-in code when you ask for one. Nothing else, unless you ask for it.
If you asked us to tell you when a perfume arrives, we send that one email and then erase the address you gave for it.
We send no newsletter. If one is ever offered, it will go only to readers who ask for it.
12Who may have an account
Accounts are for adults. You state that you are 18 or over when you make one.
We do not ask your date of birth. If we learn that an account belongs to someone under 18, we close it and erase what it held.
13What you can ask of us
See what we hold, correct it, ask for your list, or delete your account. Every reader has the same rights, wherever they live.
Deleting your account is on the site: press the three dots at the top of any page, then “Delete my profile”.
For anything else, write to [email protected] from the address on your account. We answer within 30 days.
Asked for, your list is a plain text file of your shelf, sent to the address on your account: each perfume, owned or wanted, and what you wrote on its card. It holds your own entries, not the site's cards or drawings.
14When you delete your account
Your shelf, your answers and your email address are erased. The totals they were part of stay: they are counts, and nothing in them points to you.
Erasing is done at once on the computers the site runs on, and within 30 days in their backup copies. Once your answers are erased, no record remains of which answers were yours.
15How long we keep things
For as long as you have an account, and no longer.
Records of sign-ins and of emails sent are kept for 90 days. Totals are kept for as long as the site runs.
16Keeping it safe
We keep as little as the site needs, and if our computers are ever broken into we tell every reader affected.
We would tell you by email, without delay, what was taken and what we have done about it.
17Where the site is aimed
The site is run from the United States, in English, with prices in US dollars. It is not aimed at readers in Europe or Britain.
Your information is kept in the United States. No tracker is ever loaded for a visitor in Europe, Britain or Switzerland.
18“Do Not Track” and similar signals
We do not follow you across other sites, so today there is nothing for such a signal to switch off.
If advertising is ever switched on, a browser signal that says no, such as Global Privacy Control, will be treated as your no.
19Changes to this page
We email account holders thirty days before a change, and a change never loosens what we may do with what we already hold unless you say yes again.
This page is in force from 14 October 2026. Earlier versions are kept and can be asked for at [email protected].
