Bushman's candle
No oil of it is in the perfumer's usual palette; the note is the smell of a southern African desert shrub whose waxy, resinous bark burns like a candle and is used as incense.
- What it is
- Something that grows but gives no oil worth extracting, so perfumers rebuild its smell from other materials.
- Known in
- Amnesia Rose (Aedes de Venustas, 2023)
- Worth knowing
- The bark outlasts the plant: when a shrub dies it is left behind as hollow sleeves, which are gathered and burned.
