Bushman's candle

No oil of it is in the perfumer's usual palette; the note is the smell of a southern African desert shrub whose waxy, resinous bark burns like a candle and is used as incense.

What it is
Something that grows but gives no oil worth extracting, so perfumers rebuild its smell from other materials.
Known in
Amnesia Rose (Aedes de Venustas, 2023)
Worth knowing
The bark outlasts the plant: when a shrub dies it is left behind as hollow sleeves, which are gathered and burned.
