What it is: Natural oil from wood of Chamaecyparis obtusa.
Where it comes from: Japan and Taiwan
When you smell it: Heart: as it settles.
What perfumers do with it: Adds clean, airy, Japanese-style woodiness to fresh woody, citrus and aromatic compositions.
Worth knowing: Hinoki is the traditional wood of Japanese soaking tubs and Shinto shrines, prized for its scent and rot resistance.
